Into the wild blue yonder

Yesterday evening I watched with anticipation the launch of the Shuttle Discovery.I haven't been interested in seeing a shuttle launch in years, mostly because they are rather uneventful and unexciting (which is what we'd rather them to be anyway). I remember being a small child and running out the front door at my mother's direction to watch them launch. At 2 in the afternoon it looks like a bullet whizzing through the air and leaving a trail of exhaust similar to a jet plane. Pretty quick and not very stimulating.
Yesterday, however, all the conditions were just right. It was a sunset launch and the sky was clear; the first signs of it were similar to a fireball propelling itself upward over the trees. The orange trail left behind was a spectacular vision to behold. Of course I forgot my camera.
After the booster rockets dropped off (and you could see them drop, that's how clear the sky was) another white smoke cloud appeared in the center of the sky and I watched the shuttle follow the earth's path and disappear.

Bicycle Race!

Another West Palm Beach Alley Cat race came and went on Saturday. All proceeds went to support the MS-150 ride from Miami to Key Largo.
Basically an Alley-Cat race is a gathering of bicyclists who each get a map containing checkpoints they must find across the city. At each checkpoint the rider will be asked to perform some task - anything from answering a simple question to doing a handstand to dousing yourself with various liquids. The rider must complete the task and have their map marked off by the checkpoint attendant. Once they've finished their checkpoints they meet up at the finish line. After the race everyone puts on their party hats.
My checkpoint duty was to throw eggs at people for them to catch. Maybe they were raw, maybe they were hard-boiled. So you better catch it.
Unfortunately, I left my camera in the glove box of my car and Allen used the car to get to his own checkpoint.
So here are some cell-phone photos from the after-party:

March Give-Away

Another Give-Away!
And this time I'm giving away a CUFF Bracelet!
I have this metallic blue slinky cuff:It's about 2 1/2" wide and fits a 6 1/4" wrist. Made from a rough cut of leather, so it has a few spots and nicks for a disheveled, broken-in look.

And I have this brown alligator-print splice cuff. Smaller in size and more pop-fashion. About 2 1/4" wide - fits a 6" wrist.
So... here's the give-away part:

Choose which cuff you'd like and write it in a comment, along with your e-mail address and/or Etsy shop name, so I can contact you.

The winner will be chosen on March 31st!

Tuesday

Time for movies!
Every Tuesday we attend Movie Night and I'm curious what tonight's showing will be. Since we've finished Trailer Park Boys, the short will be from Wholphin #7.
Here's some of our recent presentations:Strange Brew.
Classic Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas.

Hamburger the Movie.
Quite possibly written by 7th graders and starring anyone with nothing better to do, but amusing in a MST3K manner.

And last week we watched Heavyweights.
Pretty funny for a Disney movie and a bit crude. And this one kid always wore amazing t-shirts (like Fire Marshall Bill from In Living Color).

I can hardly wait!

the WATCHMEN

It was...... AMAZING!
I rarely ever attend movies at big theaters (the last movie I saw this way being the Simpson's Movie) and most certainly would avoid going to see any film on opening night. Call me crazy, but the crowds and the noise can really ruin a movie for me.
However, when my sister came to me with two IMAX tickets that she now couldn't use, I jumped at the chance. I have never been to an IMAX movie before, and that seemed like extra fun.
Once Allen and I found our way through the maze of a three-lever theater, bought snacks and sodas and found our seats, we still had about a half-hour of crowded theater chatter before the room darkened and the Harry Potter preview showed. Luckily, that was the only preview and the movie started immediately.
BAM! Right into the action!
I'm incredibly pleased that the story stuck faithfully by the book, quite literally panel-by-panel in most cases. It is filled with gruesome violence, explicit sexual situations, and yes, true to the book, John (aka Dr. Manhattan) is stark naked throughout the majority of the film (so there's quite a bit of penis on the screen).

I completely recommend this movie to fans of the book!!

laugh it off

Here's a picture of some shoes that came into our shop for repair:

The strange thing is, this isn't the first pair. I guess clowns need cobblers, too.
